Web 2.0 Thoughts

While I can appreciate the depth of the O'Reilly article, "What Is Web 2.0: Design Patterns and Business Models for the Next Generation of Software," I must confess that my eyes began to glaze over after a while and I started to feel a certain amount of panic. It's the usual panic I experience when I realize technology has sped ahead (yet again) and left me far behind. I'll call it techno-panic. It's the realization that technology never sleeps and, because of the fact that I must, I never quite feel that I've mastered, well, anything before things change again.

I think I deserve credit for migrating from 8-tracks to cassettes to CDs to, yes, my iPod. That journey was relatively smooth (except for the fact that I've yet to duplicate my initial vinyl collection). But now I'm dating myself and digressing at the same time.

I'm amazed and excited about the changes from Web 1.0's information delivery profile to 2.0's collective intelligence. O'Reilly's analogy of the Web as brain synapses conjures up "Star Trek's" Borg ... and, as a visual person, helps me understand the concept of collective/collaborative existence/intelligence.

I look forward to exploring the options social software affords to enhance my library program. Adding a blog to my library web page should be so much fun. Or maybe I'll start a wiki ...

Michelle,

“Techno-panic”, Fabulous term! You can be sure I am going to use it, especially since I have a chronic case myself. I hear you regarding technology changing at wrap speed. Did you ever hear the joke, how to eat an elephant? The answer after many clever lines is “one bite at a time. That’s my techno-panic cure - one ‘byte’ at a time!

I too am excited about using these new Web 2.0 tools with my students. I am already planning a wiki with my fifth graders to post their research on the Revolutionary War. During spring vacation I attended a technology workshop at Nobles and heard Alan November. WOW! Was he inspiring. I had to run out and get his book Empowering Students with Technology. I have started it but reality is setting in and not sure when I will finish it. But what I have read so far ... is motiviating me to try more new Web 2.0 tools with my students.
